Welcome to Glencoe's Downtown Tuneup, the project website and collaborative workspace for residents and stakeholders to interact, share ideas, and help make Downtown Glencoe even better.
Stay Tuned! Quick Polls are on the horizon — We want to hear from you regarding thoughts and ideals relative to Urban Design in the downtown. Tomorrow we will start that conversation via a series of Quick Polls (remember those??). We will ask you to consider what types of urban design elements would enhance Downtown Glencoe and at what key intersections those should be. In the meantime, be sure to brush up on what we mean by Urban Design is by clicking here.
Context: “The draft is exactly what its title states. It is intended to stimulate discussion in the community. It is full of ideas and possibilities… The new discussion draft reflects your ideas from the “Candy Chang” wall, your feedback on the website, the input from panelists and guests and interested individuals at Commission meetings, and the work of consultants. It is food for thought, and thoughtful discussion.”
– Caren Thomas, Chairman of the Village of Glencoe Plan Commission
Congratulations to the Planning Commission and Staff for the very well done draft for the Village Plan up date. My wife and I have attended numerous Commission meetings and feel that you have turned out a very comprehensive document for consideration.
Please consider the following comments regarding specific Implementation Steps. Each of our comments is based upon our feeling that Glencoe is an understated community with sophisticated tastes. We feel that Glencoe should not aspire to make a splash for attention, rather we should remain relatively understated in our presentation to the general public.
PS 1 – Gateway signage – this should be minimal. A sign on the freeway indicating Dundee as the exit to Writer’s Theatre, a sign on Sheridan pointing to downtown Glencoe perhaps.
PS 13 – Streetscape treatments – This could get ugly in a hurry. The idea of festive lighting on Tudor Court sound s particularly off putting.
PS 16 – Festoon Lighting – per above this sounds like a really bad idea. Glencoe is a quite, understated community, not a resort.
PS 18 Install a gateway feature – Something that might be done in Wilmette or Highland Park, not Glencoe.
PS 20 Wyman Green – Regarding a stage, is that really necessary? The setup in the Tudor Court Parking area works well for the stage during the summer bike race events. However, if the Village is going to support the Farmer’s Market, then making the Green more friendly for that weekly event would be welcome.
